Heart Rate Variability (HRV) is determined by analyzing the time series of beat-to-beat intervals from an electrocardiogram (ECG).
HRV is a popular tool within psychophysiology as it can be an easy indicator to assess the relative contributions of the parasympathetic and sympathetic nerves to the control of basic cardiac rhythm. ECG, blood pressure, or arterial pulse recordings can be used to investigate this interplay between sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems.

Perform robust beat detection, power spectral analyses and creates tachograms, histograms, Poincaré plots and statistical reports. You can even automatically or manually exclude ectopic beats with the Beat Classifier view.
HRV is typically performed on ECG recordings ranging in length from as short as 5mins to >24hours. The consecutive beat-t-beat intervals (R-R intervals) are extracted from the ECG. Since its the variations in time between normal heartbeats (N-N intervals) that is analyzed, it is essential that abnormal beats (such as ectopics and noise) are removed from the analysis. The HRV module in LabChart can automate this process for you.
